Roots selected for nursery success

Our seedling programme serves garden nurseries, perennial growers, landscape suppliers and specialist peony producers. Plants are selected for healthy root development, variety character and suitability for commercial growing.

Seedlings are lifted during suitable seasonal windows, sorted carefully and packed to protect moisture and structure during export.

Seedling workflow

From lifting to export crate

Eight careful steps keep roots vigorous, well graded and ready to grow on arrival.

01

Lifting

Roots are lifted on a dry day in September–October, protecting the buds and fleshy roots, and the dried top growth is cut back.

02

Soil removal

Heavy soil is shaken off. Premium orders may be rinsed with clean water, while standard orders are shaken only and not washed.

03

Division & trimming

Divisions are split along the natural root crown, with commercial plants carrying at least 3 plump buds; diseased, rotten and hollow old roots are removed and the cut ends tidied.

04

Shade drying

Roots are spread in a cool, airy, shaded place for 1–2 days until the fleshy roots soften and no free surface water remains. Direct sun is never used.

05

Root sanitising

Roots are soaked for 20–30 minutes in an approved sanitising solution, optionally with a rooting agent, then shade-dried again until the surface is dry. Skipped entirely for chemical-free orders.

06

Grading

Plants are graded by bud count and root vigour; black-rot, insect-damaged and weak plants are discarded.

07

Moisture packing

Roots are wrapped in moss, coir or a moisture-retaining pad without burying the buds deeply, then packed in ventilated corrugated cartons to prevent crushing and bud breakage.

08

Storage & dispatch

Short-term storage is cool and airy; for long-term storage or export, roots are held at 0–4°C in high humidity, checked periodically for mould, and every carton is labelled with variety, bud count and lifting date.

Graded by bud count

Divisions are graded by bud count and root vigour to a single agreed standard before packing.

Moisture held in transit

Moss, coir or a moisture-retaining pad keeps the roots from drying out on the way.

Fully traced lots

Every carton is labelled with its variety, bud count and lifting date.

Export planned

Lifting and shipping are timed around dormant windows and destination import rules.
